Why Safety Labeling is important

*OSHA requires machine and equipment warning labels to clearly communicate the specific hazard, the consequences of exposure, and how to avoid it. To maintain compliance, labels should be placed directly on or near the hazard and strictly adhere to standardized color coding, design, and formatting requirements.

Key OSHA Requirements & Standards

· Signal Words & Colors: Labels must use specific signal words on corresponding colored headers to denote the severity of the hazard:

o DANGER (Red header): Used for the most severe hazards that will result in death or serious injury.

o WARNING (Orange header): Used for hazards that could result in death or serious injury.

o CAUTION (Yellow header): Used for minor or moderate hazards that could result in minor or moderate injury. 

· Design Guidelines: While OSHA covers general specifications in 1910.145, the agency expects employers to utilize ANSI Z535 design principles, which include easy-to-read fonts, standardized symbols, and clear formatting.

· Readability: Text must be readable by workers from a safe viewing distance.

· Worker Comprehension: Labels must be legible, permanent, and understood by all employees, including those with limited English proficiency.

Common Machinery Warning Labels

· Mechanical Hazards: Pinch points, rotating machinery, and "Do Not Operate Without Guards".

· Electrical Hazards: High voltage, arc flash warnings, and "Lock Out Power Before Servicing".

· Thermal Hazards: Hot surface and burn warning labels.

· Automated Equipment: "This Machine Starts Automatically" or "Watch for Moving Equipment".

· Appendix A to § 1910.145(f) - Recommended Color Coding

While the standard does not specifically mandate colors to be used on accident prevention tags, the following color scheme is recommended by OSHA for meeting the requirements of this section:

· "DANGER" - Red, or predominantly red, with lettering or symbols in a contrasting color.

· "CAUTION" - Yellow, or predominantly yellow, with lettering or symbols in a contrasting color.

· "WARNING" - Orange, or predominantly orange, with lettering or symbols in a contrasting color.

· "BIOLOGICAL HAZARD" - Fluorescent orange or orange-red, or predominantly so, with lettering or symbols in a contrasting color.
